Cameroon has won its inaugural Women's Africa Cup of Nations title by defeating Malawi. This victory marks a significant achievement in the country's football history.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon achieved a historic milestone by winning their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, defeating Malawi 3-0 in the final held in Rabat, Morocco, on August 16, 2026. This victory marks a significant achievement for Cameroon, who had previously lost in three finals before finally clinching the title on their fourth attempt.
Dominant Performance
Cameroon showcased their strength throughout the match, particularly in the first half, where they established a commanding lead. Marie Ngah was the standout performer, scoring two goals in the first half. She opened the scoring in the 20th minute by capitalizing on a loose ball in the box. Naomi Eto then doubled the lead for Cameroon in the 30th minute, and Ngah added her second goal just before halftime, finishing off a well-placed pass from Eto in the third minute of added time.
Malawi's Remarkable Journey
Malawi, ranked 153rd in the world and 32nd in Africa, made an impressive run to the final, marking their debut in the continental championship. Despite the loss, their journey to the final was celebrated as a fairytale story in the tournament.
With this victory, Cameroon joins the ranks of the four different winners of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations since its inception in 1998. Nigeria holds the record with ten titles, followed by Equatorial Guinea with two and South Africa with one. The triumph also secures both Cameroon and Malawi a spot in the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year, alongside semifinalists Morocco and Algeria, who finished third after winning the bronze medal match on penalties.
