Fifa has publicly apologized for the controversy surrounding its now-abandoned plan to privatize the World Cup, which faced significant backlash from various stakeholders. During a crisis meeting held in Morocco, Fifa President Gianni Infantino received the "full support" of senior directors, despite the criticism directed at him regarding the proposal.

Controversial Proposal and Backlash

The plan, which aimed to open the World Cup to private investment, was intended to generate up to US$4.2 billion based on a valuation of US$20 billion for a new commercial subsidiary named the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE). This initiative was projected to provide each of Fifa's 211 member associations with a one-time payment of US$20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle from US$8 million to US$20 million. However, rather than being seen as a beneficial move, the proposal sparked outrage, particularly from European football's governing body, Uefa, which threatened to boycott the World Cup.

Apology and Acknowledgment of Errors

In light of the backlash, Infantino withdrew the plan on Saturday, admitting that “errors were made” during the process. Following the meeting in Rabat, Fifa's leadership acknowledged that the proposal's handling was flawed and that the Fifa Council and member associations should not have felt excluded from the discussions. A separate letter was sent to the Fifa Council and member associations, expressing regret for the missteps and committing to preventing similar issues in the future.

As Fifa navigates this controversy, the organization remains focused on its mission to unite and improve the sport. The support for Infantino from senior officials indicates a desire to move forward while addressing the concerns raised by the recent events.
