FIFA's chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, has publicly criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding his controversial proposal to sell stakes in the organization. Lamour described the initiative as the "project of one person" and expressed his concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the plan.

Lamour's Strong Stance

In a statement to the Associated Press, Lamour indicated that FIFA staff had been "deceived" by Infantino's approach to the sell-off, asserting that they "deserve better than contempt and intimidation." He emphasized that the project should not proceed and urged football's political leaders to reflect on their decisions moving forward. Lamour's comments suggest a significant rift within FIFA, as he openly challenged Infantino's authority, stating he would "sleep well tonight" regardless of the potential consequences.

Resignation and Opposition

Lamour's remarks followed the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's senior adviser, who also opposed the sell-off plan. Cordeiro, a former president of the US Soccer Federation, stated he was not involved in discussions regarding the proposal, which is backed by a New York investment fund led by Joshua Kushner. He labeled the $20 billion commercial subsidiary as "a bad deal for football," further highlighting the internal dissent within FIFA regarding Infantino's strategy.

As the September 19 deadline approaches for football federations to decide on the proposal, the situation remains tense. Lamour, who has been with FIFA since 2024, reaffirmed his commitment to his colleagues, indicating that he would accept any repercussions for his outspoken stance. "If that means I lose my job then so be it," he stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation within the organization.
