FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure to resign amid significant backlash over his controversial plans to sell stakes in the World Cup. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has taken a firm stance, indicating that a boycott of FIFA activities is on the table if Infantino does not step down.

UEFA's Strong Opposition

According to a report by the BBC, senior UEFA officials have stated that Infantino's opponents are prepared to refuse cooperation with FIFA unless he resigns. Some factions within UEFA, who have been adversely affected by the withdrawal of the stake sale proposal, have expressed their determination to continue fighting against Infantino's leadership. They feel they have no option but to resist as long as he remains in power.

Concrete discussions are reportedly taking place regarding collective actions, which may include legal measures and a complete withdrawal from FIFA meetings. UEFA Vice President Laura McAllister emphasized the need for decisive action against what she termed a "disastrous administration," criticizing the attempts to mask issues with a singular plan. She expressed hope for a leadership change by next year.

Controversial Stake Sale Plans

Infantino previously established FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) to manage commercial rights for major tournaments, including the World Cup and Club World Cup. He attempted to sell stakes to U.S. venture capital firms, such as Slice Capital, but later withdrew the proposal. During this period, he offered $40 million to member associations that supported him, setting a deadline of September 19, which sparked outrage throughout the football community.

In light of these developments, UEFA has demanded that FIFA preserve all materials related to FFE, including emails and documents, and has warned of potential legal action against institutional investors involved in the stake sale.

Infantino's support is rapidly dwindling, with Wales already having withdrawn its backing for his fourth term. The Football Association of England and the Scottish Football Association are also expected to follow suit, alongside Serbia, Sweden, and Finland, further isolating Infantino within the footballing world.
