FIFA Reverses Decision, Allows Fans to Bring Water Bottles After Mass Backlash

In response to widespread criticism, FIFA has allowed fans to bring water bottles to matches. This decision aims to prioritize fan safety and comfort during events.

FIFA has reversed its earlier decision regarding fan hydration at the upcoming 2026 World Cup, now permitting supporters to bring their own water bottles into matches. This change comes after significant backlash from fans, supporters’ groups, and government officials who criticized the original policy as prioritizing commercial interests over fan welfare.

Initial Policy Changes Spark Outrage

Initially, FIFA's guidelines allowed fans to bring empty, transparent, reusable plastic water bottles into stadiums. However, on June 2, the organization updated its stadium code, prohibiting the use of hydration stations and eliminating the allowance for fans to carry in empty bottles. This decision led to widespread criticism, with many arguing it would force fans to buy overpriced water in hot stadiums.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned FIFA's actions as a “pure money grab,” while New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his concerns regarding FIFA's management and pricing strategies for the World Cup, which will culminate at East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on July 19.

New Policy Allows Water Bottles

In response to the outcry, FIFA has now allowed fans to bring a single factory-sealed 20oz (590ml) soft-plastic disposable water bottle to matches, lifting the previous restriction on empty bottles. This decision is particularly relevant given the high temperatures expected in many of the 16 host cities during the tournament.

While some North American sports venues have adapted their policies to allow fans to bring in outside beverages, the new rules for the World Cup currently apply only to the 13 stadiums in the U.S. and Canada. No announcements have been made regarding similar permissions for venues in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. At all locations, fans will still be prohibited from bringing in food or hard-sided drink containers.

The decision to allow water bottles is a crucial step in ensuring fan comfort and safety during the tournament, especially considering the heat conditions anticipated this summer.
