The situation has escalated following FIFA's announcement to establish a private company, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to manage its competitions, prompting a strong backlash from European football.

Emergency Talks on the Horizon

This week, emergency discussions regarding a potential World Cup boycott are anticipated after UEFA declared that the World Cup is "not an asset to trade." The backlash stems from FIFA's proposal to create FFE, which would oversee the commercial rights and operational aspects of its tournaments. Reports indicate that there is "much discontent and serious concerns" among UEFA member nations, leading to expectations of a coordinated response, including the possibility of boycotting future World Cups if FIFA proceeds with its plans.

Infantino Under Investigation

The controversy surrounding FIFA has intensified as it was revealed that Gianni Infantino is scheduled to appear before the US House Judiciary Committee. The committee is investigating allegations that FIFA sought special treatment from the Trump administration, alongside concerns over rising World Cup ticket prices and potential political favors related to corruption inquiries. The situation worsened with the announcement that Thrive Eternal, a company linked to Joshua Kushner, would lead the investor group for FFE.

FIFA maintains that the new company will remain under its control and is expected to generate over 10 billion US dollars (£7.5bn) for football development globally over the next four years, contingent on approval from national associations and the FIFA Council. The organization has emphasized that outside investors will hold minority, non-controlling stakes in FFE, asserting that it will retain "exclusive authority" over football governance and all related decisions.
