FIFA World Cup 2026: New setback looms ahead of tournament, here’s what you need to know before buying a ticket | Football News - The Times of India
As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, new challenges are emerging for fans looking to buy tickets. Stay informed with key details before making your purchase.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is facing significant challenges as the ticket market shows signs of distress just weeks before the tournament. Despite initial expectations for a surge in demand, resale prices have plummeted in various host cities across the United States. Officials in Arlington have reported that a substantial number of available seats remain unsold, indicating that the anticipated rush for tickets may not materialize as expected.
Declining Ticket Sales
Recent data from TicketData reveals that average resale prices for matches in the U.S. have decreased by approximately 23 percent over the past month. Currently, the average entry price for a ticket exceeds $550, which is deterring many casual fans from participating. In Arlington, officials disclosed during a city council meeting that only 35 to 50 percent of the approximately 700,000 available tickets have been sold thus far. Similar trends are evident in the Dallas area, where ticket sales for matches like Netherlands vs. Japan and England vs. Croatia have dropped by 12 percent and 21 percent, respectively.
Market Hesitation
Industry experts suggest that fans are adopting a wait-and-see approach, hoping for further price reductions before committing to purchases. Robert Lodes from Metro Tickets noted that while the term "cheap" may not apply to World Cup tickets, there are still valuable deals available. This shift in consumer behavior has led to a slowdown in what ticket analysts refer to as “purchasing velocity,” with many supporters opting to monitor the market rather than make immediate buys. Keith Pagello, founder of TicketData, succinctly stated that the decline in prices is a direct result of insufficient purchasing activity to sustain the previously high ticket prices.
The ticketing issues are compounded by underwhelming hotel bookings in several host cities and rising travel costs. As the tournament approaches, the excitement surrounding the World Cup is being overshadowed by concerns over affordability and accessibility for fans.
