Ghana names Carlos Queiroz as coach ahead of FIFA World Cup | Africanews
Ghana has appointed Carlos Queiroz as their new head coach in preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This decision comes as the team seeks to enhance its competitive edge on the global stage.

Ghana has officially appointed Carlos Queiroz as the head coach of its men's national football team, as announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Monday, April 13. Queiroz will be at the helm as Ghana prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Immediate Preparations for the World Cup
According to the GFA, Queiroz will "begin work immediately" to get the Black Stars ready for the tournament. Ghana is set to kick off its World Cup campaign in Group L against Panama on June 17, followed by matches against England and Croatia. The team will also have warm-up games scheduled against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
Queiroz's Experience and Vision
In a statement on the GFA website, Queiroz expressed his commitment to the role, stating, "This is not just another job — it is a mission. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul." He was selected from over 600 applicants, both local and international, due to his extensive experience with World Cup tournaments. Queiroz previously led South Africa to qualification in 2002, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and coached Iran during the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. His coaching career also includes stints in Egypt, Qatar, and most recently Oman.
Queiroz takes over the coaching position from Otto Addo, who was dismissed on March 31 after the team suffered four consecutive losses in warm-up matches. With the World Cup approaching, Queiroz's leadership will be crucial for Ghana's aspirations on the global stage.
