FIFA President Gianni Infantino has responded to critics of the recent World Cup, asserting that they are spreading hate and misinformation while celebrating the tournament's success. In an open letter shared on social media, Infantino emphasized the joy and unity experienced by millions of fans during the event, which was held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico and ultimately won by Spain.

Defending the Tournament

Infantino, 56, expressed disappointment that detractors failed to recognize the positive atmosphere of the tournament. He stated, “You were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all,” addressing those who have criticized the event. He highlighted FIFA's commitment to organizing a successful tournament, noting that while critics sit behind their screens, FIFA is actively working to deliver an exceptional experience.

Addressing Controversies

The tournament was not without its controversies, including issues related to US visa restrictions impacting supporters and officials from various countries, as well as concerns regarding teams from regions affected by conflict. Infantino's letter also referenced the scrutiny surrounding FIFA's management of the Folarin Balogun disciplinary case, particularly after US President Donald Trump intervened in the suspension of Balogun's one-match ban following a red card incident against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, officiating decisions during Argentina's match against Egypt sparked significant debate among fans.

Despite these challenges, Infantino maintained that the tournament was marked by “100 percent safety and security, only joy and happiness,” reinforcing his belief in the overall success of the World Cup.
