Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed strong criticism of Gianni Infantino, stating he is "the wrong man" to lead FIFA. This remark follows the resignation of a senior adviser to Infantino and the opposition from a third confederation regarding his controversial proposal to sell stakes in competitions to private investors.

Burnham's Critique of Infantino's Leadership

Burnham's comments came shortly after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) voiced its disapproval of Infantino's plan, asserting that it could not "realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required to move forward." The AFC emphasized the importance of the FIFA World Cup as a unifying event for global football, stating that any proposal that jeopardizes this unity must be reconsidered. Burnham echoed these sentiments, labeling the initial proposal as "an outrageous suggestion" and indicating that it reflects poorly on Infantino's capability to lead the organization.

Resignation of Senior Adviser

In a significant development, Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's senior adviser on global strategy and governance, resigned, characterizing the proposal as "a bad deal for football" that would "mortgage football's future."
