Iran reportedly demands assurances for World Cup – POLITICO

Iran is reportedly seeking assurances related to its participation in the World Cup, highlighting potential political and logistical challenges. This demand underscores the complexities surrounding the event and Iran's involvement.

Iran has confirmed its intention to compete in the upcoming World Cup in North America, but the Iranian Football Federation is seeking a series of guarantees from FIFA and the tournament's hosts, which include the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Visa Guarantees Requested

The federation has requested assurances that all players, coaches, and officials will be granted visas to attend the tournament, which is set to begin on June 11. This request specifically includes those individuals who have completed military service with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an entity designated as a terrorist organization in both Canada and the U.S., according to a report by the BBC.

Security and Respect for National Symbols

In addition to visa assurances, Iran is also demanding enhanced security for its team during the tournament. The federation has emphasized the importance of maintaining respect for the Iranian flag and national anthem throughout the event. Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, stated, “All players and technical staff, especially those who served their military service in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, should be granted visas without problems,” as reported by the Independent.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated that Iran will indeed participate in the World Cup, emphasizing the event's role in uniting people. His comments come in the wake of the Iranian Football Federation president being denied entry to Canada for a congress related to the competition.
