Iran says FIFA must ensure World Cup access, urges hosts to issue visas without politics - ABC News

Iran has urged FIFA to ensure that all fans can access the World Cup, emphasizing the need for host countries to issue visas free from political considerations.

Iran has confirmed that its national football team will participate in the 2026 World Cup, contingent upon FIFA ensuring the necessary conditions for their involvement. This announcement comes after previous hesitations regarding participation due to the ongoing war in the region.

FIFA's Responsibility

Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, emphasized that it is FIFA's duty to provide all essential facilities for the team. "We will make every effort. Look, our national football team is not 'travelling' to the United States, rather we are going there to take part in the FIFA World Cup," Baghaei stated. He reiterated that the host nations must issue the required visas without political interference, as mandated by FIFA regulations.

Confirmation of Participation

The president of Iran’s Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, also affirmed last week that the Iranian team has qualified for the World Cup, asserting their right to compete. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously confirmed that Iran would indeed participate in the tournament, stating, "Of course Iran will play in the United States of America," highlighting the importance of unity in the face of challenges.

Despite earlier statements from Iran's sports minister indicating that the team might not participate due to the U.S.-Israeli conflict, the situation has evolved with a ceasefire in place since April 7. The Iranian team is set to compete in Group G, alongside Egypt, New Zealand, and Belgium, marking a significant moment for the nation on the global stage.
