Iran says it will play at 2026 World Cup if hosts address ‘concerns’ | World Cup 2026 News | Al Jazeera
Iran has stated it will compete in the 2026 World Cup if the host countries address its concerns. The announcement highlights ongoing discussions around the tournament's logistics and diplomatic considerations.

Iran's football federation has confirmed that the men's national team will participate in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to commence in June, provided that the joint hosts— the United States, Mexico, and Canada— address certain conditions set by the federation. This announcement follows a recent incident where Canada denied entry to the federation's president due to alleged connections with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was designated a terrorist organization in 2024.
Conditions for Participation
The Iranian federation stated on its official website, “We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account.” They emphasized their commitment to participate without compromising their beliefs, culture, and convictions. Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian football federation (FFIRI), revealed on state television that Tehran has outlined ten conditions for its participation, which include the assurance of visas for the team and respect for their national symbols during the tournament. Additionally, they are demanding heightened security measures at airports, hotels, and routes to the stadiums.
US Response and FIFA's Position
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Iranian players would be welcomed at the tournament. However, he cautioned that the US might restrict entry for members of the Iranian delegation linked to the IRGC. Taj specifically called for all players and technical staff, particularly those who have served in the IRGC, to be granted visas without complications. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play its World Cup matches in the US as planned.
During the tournament, Iran will be based in Tucson, Arizona, and is set to compete in Group G against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. The Iranian team will kick off their World Cup journey against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. The Iranian federation firmly stated, “No external power can deprive Iran of its participation in a cup to which it has qualified with merit.”
