Iran World Cup team coach says it was ordered out of U.S. right after first match - CBS News

The coach of Iran's World Cup team stated that they received an order to leave the U.S. right after their opening match, highlighting potential political issues.

Inglewood, California — Following their opening match of the World Cup, Iran's national football team was unexpectedly ordered to leave the United States and return to their training base in Mexico. The team had just played to a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday night when they received the directive to depart just hours after the game.

Unexpected Departure

Coach Amir Ghalenoei did not specify who issued the order for the team to leave earlier than planned. The players had anticipated staying in California overnight to aid in their recovery after the match. Instead, they were instructed to board a plane for the 140-mile journey back to Tijuana. "They didn't even give us time to recover," Ghalenoei stated through an interpreter. He expressed concern about the impact on the team's recovery process, saying, "It's very important for us to have time for recovery, (but) we are asked to get on a plane and return to our camp in Tijuana, and we are really troubled by that."

Challenges Faced by the Team

The Iranian team's World Cup preparations have been complicated by ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly following the onset of conflict involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran on February 28. Despite these challenges, Iran chose to participate in the tournament, even after FIFA denied their request to relocate their group-stage matches outside of the U.S. Captain Mehdi Taremi highlighted the difficulties faced by the team, noting that they endured five hours of travel and security checks during what is typically a short trip from Tijuana to Los Angeles.

Ghalenoei expressed confusion over the abrupt decision to return, stating, "I think it's very strange. It seems like others are doing the planning for us." He emphasized that the team was supposed to stay in Los Angeles for recovery before returning the following day. Taremi echoed these sentiments, stating, "We have to leave Los Angeles right now, and it's not good for us," and called for more support from FIFA, describing their situation as "like a disaster."

Impact on Player Performance

Ghalenoei noted that several players experienced cramps during the match, attributing these issues to inadequate preparation time stemming from the team's logistical and diplomatic hurdles. He remarked, "Before the game, I said we haven't had time to adjust because of the travel." The absence of key staff members, including the president of Iran's football federation and various support personnel who were denied U.S. visas, has further complicated the team's situation.

As the Iranian team navigates these challenges, they continue to focus on their performance in the tournament, despite the obstacles they face both on and off the pitch.
