Mauricio Pochettino defends Gio Reyna selection, U.S. World Cup roster selection process – DNYUZ

Mauricio Pochettino supports Gio Reyna's inclusion in the U.S. World Cup roster while discussing the selection process, emphasizing the importance of evaluating player performance.

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the U.S. men's national soccer team, recently addressed the emotional complexities surrounding the selection process for the upcoming World Cup roster. He understands the joy of being chosen for such a prestigious event, as well as the disappointment of being left off the list. Pochettino emphasized the importance of being part of the roster, recalling his own experience of making Argentina's World Cup team in 2002 after missing out four years earlier.

Roster Announcement Process

The official announcement of the 26-man roster took place during a lively event near the Brooklyn Bridge, just 13 miles from the site of July’s World Cup final. Pochettino informed players of their selection via WhatsApp messages, followed by a video sent out at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday. Defender Tim Ream shared that he received the news while walking to his car after training in Charlotte, North Carolina. He described the moment as a mix of relief and excitement, immediately calling his wife to share the news.

Christian Pulisic, who plays in Italy’s Serie A, also expressed his excitement upon receiving the message while relaxing alone in Milan. In contrast, the 29 players who did not make the final roster received a straightforward email without any explanation, a decision Pochettino acknowledged as painful. He reflected on his own experiences, stating that he preferred not to hear from his coach after being cut from a roster, as it could lead to further confusion and disappointment.

Returning Players and Injury Updates

Among the selected players, 13 are returning from the last World Cup in Qatar, including notable names like Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna, and Weston McKennie. They will be joined by defenders Miles Robinson and Chris Richards, who missed the previous tournament due to injury, as well as forward Ricardo Pepi, who was one of the last cuts in 2022. Pochettino confirmed that Richards was selected despite a recent ankle injury, noting that the final roster does not need to be submitted to FIFA until Sunday. This allows teams the flexibility to replace injured players up to 24 hours before their first match.

As the World Cup approaches, Pochettino's careful handling of the selection process reflects both the excitement and the emotional weight of representing the nation on such a grand stage.
