Mexico secured a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, establishing an early lead in Group A.
Quinones and Jimenez Shine
Julian Quinones netted the first goal of the tournament just 10 minutes into the match, giving Mexico a strong start. The team maintained dominance throughout the first half, registering 10 shots, with two on target, while South Africa struggled to create scoring opportunities. The match saw South African Teboho Mokoena receive the first yellow card of the tournament, followed closely by Mexican player Brian Gutierrez.
Red Cards and Young Talent
As the second half commenced, South African Yaya Sithole was sent off after denying a clear goalscoring chance for Gutierrez, marking the first red card of the tournament. This was the first red card issued in a World Cup opening match since Marco Etchverry's dismissal in 1994. Mexico's Gilberto Mora, who came on as a substitute in the 66th minute, became the youngest player to represent Mexico in the World Cup at 17 years and 239 days old. Shortly after, Raul Jimenez extended Mexico's lead with a header in the 67th minute.
South Africa faced further challenges when Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct in the 85th minute, reducing the team to nine players. Mexico's Cesar Montes received a straight red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity, leaving both teams with 10 players on the pitch. Ultimately, Mexico's victory placed them at the top of Group A, while South Africa found themselves at the bottom.
