Nagelsmann: Everyone knows about Neuer’s aura
Julian Nagelsmann reflects on Manuel Neuer's significant presence within the team, noting how everyone recognizes the goalkeeper's unique aura and leadership skills.
Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann has shared insights into his decision to bring veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out of retirement for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™. This choice, he noted, was more challenging than the tournament itself, reflecting the weight of the discussions that preceded it.
Decision-Making Process
After unveiling his squad, Nagelsmann expressed the mental exhaustion that accompanied such a significant decision. He faced tough choices, ultimately leaving out promising talents like Tom Bischof, Nicolo Tresoldi, Assan Ouedraogo, and Said El Mala. However, he had a sense about Neuer's inclusion as early as March, when Oliver Baumann was still viewed as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper. Nagelsmann acknowledged Neuer's consistent performances for Bayern Munich, which prompted a reevaluation of the goalkeeping situation.
“We decided he was still one of the three best keepers in the country,” Nagelsmann said. “There were so many discussions among the coaches. Everyone knows about Manuel’s aura and what he brings to the team, and we are planning for him to be our No1.”
Impact on Team Dynamics
With speculation surrounding Germany's goalkeeping lineup leading up to the squad announcement, Neuer's inclusion was anticipated. Nagelsmann addressed questions regarding how Neuer's return might affect the team's playing style, asserting, “We won’t defend any less courageously just because Manu is in goal.” He highlighted Neuer's unique presence, which can unsettle opposing strikers, and emphasized the need for a mix of boldness and composure in the squad.
“Manuel is someone who can still come up with some special moments with his enthusiasm and incredible quality,” he added. Nagelsmann also reflected on Neuer's impressive form, particularly noting his standout performance in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.
Support for Baumann
Regarding Oliver Baumann, who was affected by the decision, Nagelsmann acknowledged the disappointment but praised Baumann's character. “The decision was, of course, a blow for him, which is totally understandable. But Oli is a team player and a great guy, someone who will never let the group down,” he stated.
In addition to Neuer, Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig will join the national team for training, despite not making the final squad. Nagelsmann emphasized the importance of having a fourth goalkeeper in camp, someone who is fully committed and contributes positively to the training environment.
