Qatar and Saudi Arabia qualify for 2026 World Cup - ESPN

In a historic moment for Middle Eastern football, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, showcasing their growing prowess on the global stage.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have both secured their places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, achieving this milestone on Tuesday by finishing first in their respective groups during the fourth round of Asian qualifying.

Qatar's Historic Qualification

Qatar triumphed over the United Arab Emirates with a score of 2-1, marking a significant achievement for the team. This qualification is particularly notable as it is the first time Qatar has advanced through the qualification process, having lost all three of its group-stage matches when it hosted the tournament in 2022. Coach Julen Lopetegui expressed his excitement, stating, "It's amazing, an incredible day." He emphasized the importance of this achievement, calling it "one of the best days in my career."

In the match against the UAE, Qatar's Mohammed Al-Mannai came close to scoring in the first half, with a header that narrowly missed the goal. The breakthrough came shortly after halftime when Khoukhi scored with a header from a free kick taken by Akram Afif. Afif later assisted Pedro Miguel, who headed in the second goal for Qatar. Although Qatar was reduced to ten men following Tarek Salman’s red card in the 87th minute, the team held on to secure their victory. The UAE managed to pull one back through Sultan Adil's shot, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

Saudi Arabia's Steady Performance

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia secured their qualification by drawing 0-0 with Iraq in Jeddah, which was sufficient to win Group B. The match saw Saudi Arabia dominate possession, but they were unable to convert that into goals. Iraq needed a win to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986, but the draw left them short of that goal.

With this qualification, Saudi Arabia will be making their seventh appearance at the World Cup, and they are also set to host the tournament in 2034. Both teams will now prepare for the global stage in North America next summer, marking a significant moment in their footballing histories.
