Recap | Revolution fall 1-0 at Charlotte FC in final test before World Cup break | New England Revolution

In their last match before the World Cup break, the New England Revolution fell 1-0 to Charlotte FC. The defeat highlights areas for improvement as the team heads into the break.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 23, 2026) – The New England Revolution faced a narrow defeat against Charlotte FC, losing 1-0 in their final match before the MLS regular season pauses for the FIFA World Cup. The game took place at Bank of America Stadium, where Charlotte striker Idan Toklomati scored the only goal in the 16th minute, securing three points for the hosts.

First Half Highlights

Charlotte FC started the match aggressively, with Toklomati slicing through the Revolution's defense to net the opener. The home side nearly extended their lead in the 30th minute when a defensive error by Ethan Kohler allowed Wilfried Zaha a clear chance, but Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner made a crucial diving save. New England's best opportunity in the first half came from midfielder Carles Gil, whose free kick in the 33rd minute was also thwarted by Charlotte's goalkeeper, Kristijan Kahlina. Just before halftime, Mamadou Fofana made a spectacular bicycle-kick clearance off the goal line, leaving the score at 1-0 as both teams headed to the locker room.

Second Half Shift

After the break, the Revolution gained momentum, dominating possession. In the 58th minute, Homegrown Player Peyton Miller drew a second yellow card against Charlotte defender David Schnegg, resulting in his dismissal. Miller nearly equalized shortly after, but Kahlina was again up to the task, making a save on his left-footed shot. Diego Fagundez, making his first start of the 2026 MLS season, completed 97 passes during his 79 minutes on the pitch, while Gil led the team with four key passes and matched Miller and Dor Turgeman with three shots.

Turner continued to shine in goal, recording four saves, including a vital stop on an 83rd-minute breakaway by Pep Biel. With eight wins in his 14 starts prior to the World Cup, Turner hopes to secure a spot on the U.S. Men's National Team roster.

Head Coach Marko Mitrović introduced four U.S. youth internationals off the bench, including 18-year-old Cristiano Oliveira, who made his MLS debut. Alongside him, Fagundez, Miller, and Eric Klein also represented the Revolution Academy during the match. As the Revolution sit fourth in the Eastern Conference, they will look to regroup during the summer break before resuming their regular season with a two-game homestand.
