Resilient Goodwin sets sights on World Cup audition | Lismore City News | Lismore, New South Wales

Goodwin, known for his resilience, is setting his sights on a World Cup audition. His determination and skills could secure him a spot on the international team.

Adelaide United captain Craig Goodwin is eager to make his return from injury in time for the A-League Men finals, viewing this as a crucial opportunity to secure a spot in the Socceroos squad for the upcoming World Cup. After suffering a significant groin injury in early February, Goodwin's aspirations for this year's tournament seemed to be slipping away. However, he is now focused on regaining his fitness and is targeting a comeback against Melbourne City on April 26 at AAMI Park.

Goodwin's Determination

As he prepares for his return, Goodwin has been in contact with the Socceroos coaching staff and physiotherapists, who have been monitoring his progress. He acknowledges that he may only have a few games to impress before the extended squad gathers for a pre-tournament camp next month. "I'm aware of the situation that I may only get a few games, but I hope that potentially I can have a big impact in those few games," Goodwin stated. He remains optimistic about his chances, expressing confidence in his abilities: "I've shown in the past that I'm very capable at that level and have done some good things."

Adjusting to New Tactics

Prior to his injury, Goodwin was adapting to a new tactical approach under Adelaide's head coach Airton Andrioli, spending more time in a central role rather than his usual position on the wing. Despite a challenging season in terms of statistics, he believes his performances have been solid and is eager to demonstrate his capabilities once he is back on the pitch. "So in terms of stats, it's not been my best season, but I think the performances have still been at a good level, and I still think there's much more to come as well," he remarked.

Goodwin has approached his recovery with a positive mindset, focusing on rehabilitation while also cherishing the recent birth of his second son, Elijah. He understands the challenges of securing a World Cup position but refuses to succumb to negativity. "I know it puts a difficulty on trying to attain a World Cup position, but if I sit here and just say 'oh it's over' then I've got no chance of making it," he said. Drawing on his past experience, Goodwin recalls overcoming injury to play a pivotal role in Australia's World Cup opener against France in 2022, where he scored. He hopes that this experience will aid him as he navigates his current situation.

As Goodwin looks ahead, he remains determined to make the most of his opportunities in the finals and hopes to add more memorable moments to his international career.
