Switzerland’s preparations for the World Cup have been significantly disrupted following the news that star forward Breel Embolo has been prevented from traveling to the United States. The Rennes striker was unable to join his teammates as they departed for their training camp in San Diego.

On Tuesday morning, the Swiss national team faced a major setback when it was revealed that Embolo’s ESTA authorization, which allows international visitors to enter the US, was placed under administrative review. This unexpected development shocked the Swiss camp, as the 29-year-old is regarded as a crucial player in their attacking lineup ahead of the 2026 World Cup finals. The Swiss Football Association issued a statement detailing the situation, noting, "Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team. His ESTA authorization had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30am, we were informed that his ESTA application had been placed under further review."

Background of the Visa Complications

The complications surrounding Embolo's visa appear to be linked to a legal issue from several years ago. In 2018, the Rennes forward was involved in an altercation in Basel, which resulted in a Swiss court ruling in 2023. He was convicted of making multiple threats and received a suspended fine for the incident. Although Embolo had previously traveled to the US without issue for friendly matches against Mexico and the United States in June 2025, a recent decision not to appeal the court's verdict has made the ruling final.
