Socceroos confident of being a 'problem' in World Cup knockouts - ESPN
The Socceroos believe they can pose a significant challenge in the World Cup knockout rounds, showcasing their determination and skill on the global stage.

SANTA CLARA, California -- Jackson Irvine believes that if the Socceroos can integrate their best performances from the group stage into a cohesive 90-minute display, they will pose a significant challenge to any team in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup.
Progressing to the Knockouts
After securing a 0-0 draw against Paraguay on Thursday, Australia has advanced to the Round of 32, where they will compete in Dallas on July 3. Their opponent will be the second-placed team from Group G, which will be determined after Iran faces Egypt and New Zealand takes on Belgium on Friday. While none of these potential opponents are pushovers, the Socceroos are optimistic about their chances of achieving a result that could propel them into a Round of 16 match in Atlanta, potentially against the reigning champions, Argentina.
Combining Strengths for Success
To achieve their first-ever knockout stage victory, Irvine emphasized the importance of merging the strengths displayed in their three group matches: a solid 2-0 win over Türkiye, a disappointing 2-0 loss to the United States, and a strategic draw against Paraguay. "We've got to bring probably everything that we've seen from the first three games, all together," Irvine stated. He highlighted the need to replicate their strong starts, defensive resilience, and the ability to press effectively when required.
With an eight-day break before their next match, the Socceroos are set to benefit from additional recovery time. Coach Tony Popovic noted that this period will be crucial for their younger players, who are still adjusting to the intensity of the tournament. "These eight days not only prepare us for that game, but, if we can somehow get through, we may be able to be ready for a shorter turnaround following that," Popovic added. The team is looking forward to utilizing this time to enhance their preparations for the upcoming knockout stage.
