FIFA president Gianni Infantino has launched a pointed critique against the dominant forces in football, suggesting they are attempting to monopolize the sport and hinder the development of nations outside the elite. His comments, made during a meeting with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in the Dominican Republic, did not specifically mention UEFA but were clearly directed at the major powers in the game.

Infantino's Controversial Proposal

The controversy stems from Infantino's "FIFA Forward Enterprise" (FFE) initiative, which proposes selling 20% of the commercial rights to FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private-sector investors. This move has been met with strong opposition from both CONCACAF and UEFA, who view it as a threat to their interests.

In response to his critics, Infantino stated, "Unfortunately, some do not need or do not want others to grow, but we must narrow this gap between the major nations, indeed the giant nations, and the rest of the countries." He emphasized the importance of dialogue and expressed gratitude for the support he received from the CFU.

FIFA's Mission and Future Goals

Infantino reiterated FIFA's core mission to foster the growth of football across all 211 member nations, rather than catering solely to the established powers. He acknowledged the efforts of major nations while asserting the need to provide opportunities for all. "We must find investments and opportunities for everyone," he stated, highlighting FIFA's commitment to creating access to resources for the global football community.

As the sole candidate for a fourth term in the upcoming Rabat congress elections on March 18, Infantino concluded by reaffirming the legitimacy of his actions, stating that all decisions are made in accordance with FIFA's established procedures and regulations.
