US must not insult IRGC during the World Cup: Iran’s football chief | World Cup 2026 News | Al Jazeera

Iran's football chief has urged the US to refrain from insulting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) during the upcoming World Cup. He highlights the significance of maintaining respect in the realm of international sports.

Iran's preparations for the upcoming World Cup are progressing, but the country's participation hinges on assurances from FIFA and the United States regarding respect for its military institutions. Mehdi Taj, the President of the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI), emphasized the need for guarantees that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will not be insulted during the tournament.

Seeking Guarantees from FIFA

Taj stated that the FFIRI will request assurances from FIFA that the U.S. will refrain from disrespecting the IRGC. He expressed, “Americans, if they guarantee not to insult our military institutions and the IRGC, we’ll go.” He further clarified that if such guarantees are provided, ensuring that incidents similar to the recent situation in Canada do not occur, Iran will participate in the World Cup.

This statement comes in light of a recent incident where an FFIRI delegation, including Taj, was forced to return to Turkey after facing difficulties at Toronto's Pearson airport. Despite having valid visas, the delegation cited "unacceptable behaviour" from Canadian immigration officials as the reason for their return. The FFIRI issued a statement condemning the treatment, which they claimed insulted one of Iran's esteemed military branches.

Context of Tensions

The backdrop to these events includes Canada's recent designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization, which led to Taj being denied entry based on alleged ties to the IRGC. The Canadian government has made it clear that individuals associated with the IRGC are not welcome in the country.

In addition to these diplomatic tensions, the ongoing conflict involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating thousands of deaths and injuries in the region. Iranian forces have responded by targeting locations in the Middle East where U.S. troops are stationed.

Upcoming Meetings with FIFA

In the coming weeks, Taj is scheduled to meet with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom in Zurich. During this meeting, he aims to secure guarantees that the Iranian team and its officials will not encounter entry restrictions or disrespect, particularly concerning Iran's state institutions. Taj reiterated the importance of this assurance, stating, “We need a guarantee there, for our trip, that they have no right to insult the symbols of our system – especially the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

As the World Cup approaches, the FFIRI's demands highlight the complex interplay of sports and international relations, underscoring the significance of respect and recognition on the global stage.
