Swiss striker Breel Embolo found himself unable to travel to the United States with his national team just hours before their scheduled departure. The Swiss Football Association announced that Embolo's Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was placed under further review by US authorities, preventing him from boarding the flight. The team was set to leave Zurich for Los Angeles, where they would then head to a training camp in San Diego in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Travel Plans Disrupted

As the rest of the Swiss squad proceeded with their travel plans, Embolo was left behind due to the last-minute change regarding his travel clearance. The Swiss Football Association confirmed the situation, stating, “Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team.” They further noted that they were informed at 10:30 am that his ESTA application had been flagged for additional scrutiny.

Hope for a Quick Resolution

Swiss officials are actively working with the relevant authorities to resolve the issue and expressed optimism that Embolo would be able to join the team shortly. The federation indicated, “We are in contact with the relevant authorities and expect that Breel will either join the team later today (Tuesday) or travel tomorrow and join the squad then.”

While no official explanation has been provided for the review of Embolo’s ESTA, it is known that US authorities conduct security vetting for players and staff traveling to major events. Earlier this year, Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House World Cup Task Force, emphasized the importance of security measures, stating that each visa decision is treated as a national security matter. Embolo has faced legal and disciplinary issues in the past, including a notable incident in 2021 when he was disciplined for violating COVID-19 restrictions while playing for Borussia Monchengladbach.
