World Cup 2026: Germany seek talks with Jurgen Klopp as Julian Nagelsmann resigns - BBC Sport
Germany's national team is looking to engage Jurgen Klopp for coaching discussions after Julian Nagelsmann's unexpected resignation.

The German football association is in discussions with Jurgen Klopp regarding the position of head coach for the men's national team following the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann stepped down after Germany's disappointing early exit from the World Cup.
Nagelsmann's Departure
On Thursday, Nagelsmann requested to be relieved of his coaching duties, a request that the German FA (DFB) promptly accepted, terminating his contract. The 38-year-old former Bayern Munich manager had taken charge of the national team in 2023, but Germany's elimination from the tournament marked a significant setback. They were defeated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout during the last 32 stage.
Initially, Nagelsmann expressed his intent to remain in the role, stating, "I'm not someone who runs away," after the loss. However, he later reflected on the situation, saying, "I've done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination." He emphasized that the team's success was his top priority and acknowledged the need for a fresh start after the disappointing outcome.
Germany's World Cup Struggles
This was Nagelsmann's second significant tournament with the national team, following their quarter-final appearance at Euro 2024, where they lost to Spain. Germany has struggled in recent World Cups, failing to advance beyond the group stage in both 2018 and 2022 under previous coaches Joachim Low and Hansi Flick. Since their triumph in 2014, they have not won a knockout match in the tournament.
Rudi Voller, the DFB's sporting director, acknowledged Nagelsmann's decision to step down, stating, "Julian's decision deserves our respect." He added that the team had hoped for a better performance in the tournament but maintained confidence in Nagelsmann's coaching abilities.
As the DFB looks to engage Klopp, who has shown a general willingness to take on the role, the future of the national team remains uncertain. The upcoming discussions will be crucial as Germany seeks to rebuild and improve ahead of future competitions.
