World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi subbed due to muscle fatigue rather than injury - BBC Sport

Lionel Messi was taken off the field during a World Cup 2026 match due to muscle fatigue. Team officials clarified that it was not an injury concern.

Lionel Messi was substituted in Inter Miami's recent Major League Soccer match due to "muscle fatigue" in his left hamstring, as confirmed by the club on Monday. There were initial concerns that the 2022 World Cup winner had sustained an injury during the team's high-scoring 6-4 victory over Philadelphia Union.

Medical Assessment and Coach's Comments

Following medical evaluations, Inter Miami reported that Messi's condition was merely "an overload associated with muscle fatigue." The club indicated that his return to physical activity would depend on his clinical and functional recovery. During the match, Messi had assisted in two of Miami's four goals in the first half, but he clutched his leg in the 73rd minute after taking a free-kick, prompting his immediate withdrawal. Although he went straight down the tunnel, he was seen walking normally.

Miami's coach, Guillermo Hoyos, commented on Messi's situation after the game, stating, "He really was fatigued. He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don't take any risks."

World Cup Aspirations

While Messi has not officially announced his intentions regarding participation in the upcoming World Cup, which starts on June 11, he is anticipated to make a record-equalling sixth appearance. The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Argentina's squad is expected to be revealed next week, with their first match against Algeria scheduled for June 16.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has been managing his workload carefully, although he has faced some setbacks due to hamstring issues. This season, he has recorded 12 goals and eight assists in 14 MLS matches, placing him just one goal and one assist behind the league leaders. Last season, he led the league with 29 goals and 19 assists in 28 games.
